Regional Market “Anchored Locally”
On the 9th of September 2017, the 2nd regional market in the Regiopole Region of Rostock took place at the town square in Ribnitz-Damgarten. The event, titled “regional verankert” (Anchored Locally) showed various aspects of what the Regiopole Region of Rostock has to offer in terms of its regional products, businesses, and culture in an assortment of attractive, entertaining, and diverse ways and means. There were numerous opportunities to try, get to know, take-with and enjoy things on offer. The visitors were thrilled by the all-day presentations and stage-shows, and with a large activity area for children with chances to engage in arts and crafts in addition to many other pleasant surprises, there was truly something for everyone – and admission was free!
The main aim of this event was to show that all people of all ages could feel both a part of and affiliated with marketing the Regiopole Region of Rostock. You can find more information here. You can see the stage programme here.
Location Analysis
The Regiopole Region of Rostock has been praised as a location for what it offers in terms of quality of life. In the summer of 2016, approximately 1,800 companies from Rostock, the surrounding district of Rostock in addition to the center of Ribnitz-Damgarten were asked to participate in a survey to analyse the region as a location. 551 of those took part in online and telephone interviews.
The Regiopole Region of Rostock performed particularly well among companies, showing high rates of satisfaction. The quality of life here was seen to be a clear strength of the region, with factors such as “attractiveness”, and “range of leisure activities”, noted as particularly significant for the image of the region, with the latter clearly exceeding the benchmark.
Other factors that reflected satisfaction included the public transportation networks (both regional and national), schools, kindergartens, and other daycare and after-school facilities
The companies involved seemed very loyal to the district of Rostock as a region: Questions regarding their future in the region were answered with high levels of positivity. Local comparisons also showed an above average level of affiliation and willingness to make investments. It must thus become a key aim to convince companies to not only appreciate the positive factors related to the location but also to communicate that message externally.
The topic of attaining and retaining skilled workers is currently of chief concern for companies: satisfaction levels in relation to the availability of skilled workers and applicants for training positions is currently rather low, with 41% of the survey participants reporting on vacancies. Technical positions have been most primarily affected, with 9 out of 10 of those surveyed seeing great challenges in the skilled worker sector in the next 5 years.
regio:polis 2017
The decentralised multi-week festival, a platform for art and cultural professionals (or those who engage in culture and the arts) was proud to put the Regiopole Region of Rostock’s arts and cultural scene on display for the fourth time.
The intention of this event is to encourage and present the cultural interaction between the Hanseatic City of Rostock and its surrounding area. In 2017, regio:polis collected contributions on “Fine Arts at your Front Door” (“Bildende Kunst vor der Haustür”). In a harmonious triad of “City – Country – Fine Arts”, the fine arts theme managed to entice guests to become aware of and appreciate a whole new dimension of the region and their surroundings with an array of sensual impressions.
More than 50 program items made for an enticing invitation to discover and enjoy regional art and cultural landscapes, the focal point of which were artworks from the fields of architectural design, building architecture, landscape architecture, sculptures, plastics, photography, graphics, handicrafts, paintings, in as well as other arts and crafts. These items ranged from classic exhibitions by established and new artists, in addition to artist communities at particular locations, light instillations, fashion, and gardens, as well as unconventional combinations such as enchanting photo-music productions at the beach, voluminous collages in a church, and expressive action-paintings in an old country house. Aside from all this, artists invited those lucky enough to be in attendance to take a look behind the scenes at their artistic creations – live and in direct contact, and those who felt the urge to test their own artistic creativity found themselves well catered for.
Every single exhibition was a highlight in itself, presenting a distinct perspective: at times traditionally classic and at others unconventionally multi-faceted in fusion with other forms of art.
The 2016 Day of the Regions (Tag der Regionen)
As part of the nationwide “Day of the Regions”, the Regiopole Region of Rostock initiated and held a regional market event on the “Kamp” in Bad Doberan on the 1st and 2nd of October.
Under the motto of “Our region in one world – together, sustainable, resilient”, regionality was brought into focus: the presentation of the diversity of the regional products, insight into trade and commerce, in addition to immersion into the local art and cultural landscape all made for a unique experience.
Artists, musicians, and dance groups all displayed their skills and passion for their craft on stage. Associations used the event as a means to inform those in attendance about their enriching activities. The opportunity to participate in the program gave joy to both the young and old, with the chance to play with a large building station, a regional memory game, as well as take a combined tour of the city and cathedral.
Many people felt drawn to both the “travelling cycle-cinema” (a group cycling tour from Rostock to Bad Doberan) and the Open-Air Cinema Show on the Kamp. The state-wide activity day promotes the strengths of the region and much of what it has to offer with an array of regional products, specialities, and developments.
Every year – for two weeks around the Sunday Harvest Festival (Erntedanksonntag) – the event provides an opportunity to see our impressive regional economic activity. The main aim of the event is to make as many people as possible aware of the benefits of regional economic activity and to show that opting for regional products and services can be a key factor in supporting and promoting sustainable development in the region.
The motto for 2016, “Our region in one world – together, sustainable, resilient”, thematised global responsibility for sustainable development by means of affiliation, regional association, stability, and development. For more information on the “Day of the Regions” see: www.tag-der-regionen.de.
regio:polis 2016
This festival serves as a platform for art and cultural professionals to show the diversity of the arts and cultural scene in the Regiopole Region of Rostock. The intention of this event is to encourage and present the cultural interaction between the Hanseatic City of Rostock (polis) and its interconnected region (polis).
In 2016, regio:polis collected contributions on “Fine Arts at your Front Door” (“Bildende Kunst vor der Haustür”), with approximately 40 program items in Rostock and the surrounding region for those who wanted to listen, watch, participate, and enjoy the events. This event focussed on literature with a regional association, presenting contemporary authors from the region, a story set in the area, and literary works from regional authors who have since passed away. Time and space were also allocated, however, for supra-regional contributions, in which people were free to determine the manner in which they could interpret the theme – from the classical form of a reading and exhibitions to films and poetry slams.
Every single exhibition was a highlight in itself, presenting literature from a distinct perspective: theatrical, musical, philosophical, tasty, active, and even mischievous, with Plattdeutsch (a historically significant north-German dialect) ever-present.
Why literature of all things?
- Literature demonstrates the multi-faceted wealth of possibilities that artists can explore to express themselves, be it in a traditional or unconventional manner.
- Literature can often reveal new paths and possibilities for other forms of art owing to its combination of sensory impressions – time and again acting as a point of origin for theatre and music. It is a foundation for education, science, business, and progress – certainly progress in the society in which we live.
- Literature allows us to explore and discuss our lives and the world in which we live, inspiring our imagination as well as bringing and enriching the joy and fun in our lives.
The festival began on the 23rd of April in 2016, on the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. This celebration of reading, books, and author’s rights offered the perfect occasion to reflect on and discover our origins and perception through the letters and words of literature.
1. Regiopole Region of Rostock Economic Forum
The 1st Regiopole Region of Rostock Economic Forum on the 21st and 22nd of April in 2016 was organised on the theme of “Energy and Raw Material Efficiency”. Following welcoming addresses from Dr. Wolfgang Nitzsche (the Citizanship President of the Hanseatic City of Rostock) und Sebastian Constien (The Rostock District Administrator), two impromptu presentations were held on the first day: one by Kathleen Bartels (Project Coordinator for the Regiopole Region of Rostock), who provided an overview of her organisation’s concepts, structures and projects, and one by Prof. Dr. Uwe Ritschel (Professor for Wind Energy Technology at Rostock University), who presented on the topic of “Wind Energy in MV – Trends in the Field and Cooperation between Industry and Research Institutions”.
During a tour of the harbour in closing, Jens Aurel Scharner (Managing Director of Rostock Port – Hafenentwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH) exhibited Rostock sea port and the companies that operate there.
On the 2nd day of the event, entrepreneurs and representatives from the Regiopole Region of Rostock visited three innovative companies in the district of Rostock: the biogas plant in Lalendorf, which processes sugar beet to biogas; TFC (tools for composite) GmbH in Güstrow, which produce large-format tools and moulds out of fibre-reinforced plastics for the wind power industry, among others; and SmartHeat Deutschland GmbH, which develops and manufactures innovative heat pumps for the international market.
The Güstrow Virtual Showroom
Güstrow, the city of the German expressionist Barlach, and the Regiopole Region of Rostock set up a collaborative virtualisation project for the Güstrow city center: an internet-based platform for showing the full range of retail outlets, products, and services in the town, enabling users to take a virtual stroll through the city in the comfort of their own homes. This system combines all the advantages of online shopping with what Güstrow has to offer as a town, connecting people to both the place and its shops and services.
